Valerian root has been known in medicine since ancient Greece. Valeric acid and valepotriates are found only in this plant.
In general, valerian contains about 120 active substances, including alkaloids, essential oils, acetic and malic acids. This beneficial herb is better at fighting sleep disturbances than many synthetic sleeping pills. At the same time, valerian has the following advantages:
does not cause a feeling of a kind of «hangover» in the morning;
does not reduce indicators of concentration of attention;
Its reception in various forms is also allowed for children over two years old, but before that it is necessary to consult a pediatrician and know if the child has allergies.
WHEN AND TO WHO IS VALERIAN SHOWN
Valerian is effective for occasional sleep problems. Preparations based on it are suitable if you cannot fall asleep before an important event (exam, interview, trip, etc.), since its active ingredients reduce arousal in the brain.
With chronic insomnia, it also guarantees the result, since it stabilizes the state of the nervous system.
INTERNAL USE OF VALERIANS FOR SLEEPLESS
Decoctions and infusions are prepared from this plant. They use dry crushed roots. To enhance their effect, valerian is often combined with hop cones, chamomile, and mint leaves.
To prepare the infusion, 200 ml of boiling water is poured over a tablespoon of raw materials and insisted for about 10 hours.
Accepted according to 1. Art. l. three times a day. To make a decoction, 2 tbsp. l. raw materials are poured with 200 ml of boiling water and boiled for about 15 minutes in a water bath, insisted and filtered. Drink twice a day for 2 tbsp. l.
BATHS AND PILLOWS WITH VALERIAN TO IMPROVE SLEEP
It is useful to just inhale the scent of the plant before bed. Special valerian pads are ideal for this.
You can make them yourself: sew a cover out of thin fabric or gauze, and put valerian inside; you can also add mint or lemon balm, hop cones. You don’t need to sleep on a Valerian pillow: just put it in bed or next to a child’s bed (over two years old).
Another way to relax and sleep better is an evening valerian bath. But you do not need to lie in it, it is better to take a sit-down bath so that the water does not reach chest level.
The temperature should not be too high as this will increase the heartbeat. It is better to gradually accustom the body to lukewarm water; you need to spend no more than 7 minutes in it.
To prepare a decoction for the bath 5 tbsp. l. 1 liter of boiling water is poured into the crushed root, boiled for 15 minutes, filtered and poured into the bath.
Valerian treatment is safe as the plant is non-toxic. But it is worth remembering that intolerance or an individual (reverse) reaction is possible. Exceeding the dosage and taking very long periods of time leads to drowsiness and lethargy during the day.
